Gujarat election - post mortem
Back in 2014,when the Bharatiya Janatha Party grabbed the Delhi throne with thumping majority, the number of people who believed that its dominance would continue for more than a decade were huge. The Gujarat election did prove it.Perhaps, the BJP is all capable of continuing the winning streak in 2019 but the questions that would arise to a normal politics observer are,did BJP lose the grip on certain sections of the electorate? Did the cracks start opening up on the formidable BJP fort? Can the Gujarat elections be a testimony of the same? Albeit,it proved the supremacy of NaMo it also witnessed the dawn of Rahul Gandhi as a serious politician? I bet no one would take him easy here after. The congress would consider this as a small victory amidst not so humiliating defeat.Perhaps,it could be the chunk of hope that it is awaiting. In an election where the development was projected as main agenda but later sidelined by caste politics, one has to agree that Rahul Gandhi did showcase maturity in bringing the young trio Hardik, Jignesh and Alpesh on to the same line. Can the due credit be given to only Rahul Gandhi is a different topic to debate.
There may be a time where one would look unstoppable, unbeatable against a weak, lifeless opposition. But not against time. This quote reminds me of the invincible, gigantic West Indies Cricket team in early 80's and Australian Cricket team from 1999 to 2007.Over a period of time, the once unbeatable opponent in politics can get defeated by self instigated wounds, pretty good policies but bad implementation impacting the larger middle class section.Given the miserable state of the Congress and corruption brand it acquired,it may take years to rise back from the tomb unless and until the birth of a miracle. One thing for sure is ,it is not going to be a cakewalk for BJP to retain power in 2019 all alone. The Gujarat election did expose that. Will it open its arms to regional parties capable of sweeping 2019? What can one derive out of 2G spectrum verdict involving a regional party? Do we get to witness a Third front to challenge the invincible BJP? If so,who can be that herdman? Interesting questions indeed.
