What if there are no mirrors!!
The owner of a popular shopping mall had problems in managing the elevator for customers in peak times. The customers grew impatient because of the waiting times. It became a big headache for him. Then one of his staff gave an idea to place mirrors in the lobby right in front of the elevator.Guess what,it instantly clicked. The customers started looking at the mirrors while waiting for the elevator with no irritation. Why are we so interested in ourselves on how we look? Did the early caveman cared for the looks? When did this gain traction?
I got reminded of this story when I saw the video of a baby looking at the mirror for the first time. The expression she wore was an amalgamation of a surprise and realization." Who is this?" "Oh! It's ME".Because the mental capacity was still budding there were no other emotions at display. But over next few years,as things turn out,the baby will be introduced to other emotions of pride, insecurity, dissatisfaction when looked at the mirror. So,the mirror is functioning as a source of introducing mankind to myriad emotions as well as a ego feeder.
What if 'mirrors' don't exist at all in this world? I just want to explore this thought by dumping my brain be it positive or negative. In order to stay creatively authentic,I didn't care about googling the discovery of mirror and related info as I want this to be adhoc and random. So,if the current world has never seen a mirror(any other way that reflects one's own image)what it would be like?
- The possibility is to look at our reflection in water as the early caveman would have seen.
-We would never know in detail how we look like. What does that mean? No worry about one's look which would have reduced ego and the same time rapid civilization would have been different with less care towards dressing.
- No comparison - Because we never knew how we looked,we wouldn't compare ourselves with others.Half of the world's problem would be solved.
-We would depend more on others words or judgement about us because we never knew how we looked.Imagine going to a shopping mall with no mirrors but just your buddy advising if the dress suited you or not!
- No feelings of I'm beautiful, you are not.You are beautiful,I'm not.Just may be you are beautiful or you are not.
-When we propose someone, there will be no question of 'Have you looked at your face in mirror?' :)
-No rear view mirrors in vehicles may be indicating don't look back, you are not heading there.
-There will be a shift in self centeredness channelized to other areas of mankind.
The list goes on.If you have something to add,do suggest.
